The Danube, the world’s most international river, after an extensive journey through Eastern Europe that begins in Germany’s Black Forest, reaches Dobrogea and flows into the Black Sea in a magnificent delta—the best preserved in Europe and the second largest. The Danube Delta is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is protected by the WWF. It is the natural habitat for countless plant species—approximately 1,700 in total—fish and birdlife.
Rivers, canals, marshes, lakes and islets create this remarkable protected area, perfect for exploring over 3 or 4 days. From early spring through late summer, it’s an ideal destination for birdwatching, with around 300 species making the Danube Delta their home.
The area is also home to a substantial community of wildcats, foxes, wolves, deer and wild boar. The Delta was formed—and continues to form—around the three main channels of the Danube and hosts the world’s largest reedbed.
