The Painted Monasteries and the Danube Delta are two of Romania’s most compelling destinations. With 8 to 10 days at your disposal and a desire to discover the treasures of Bucovina – a region rich in history, tradition and culture – alongside the unique biosphere of the world’s most international river delta, this itinerary is tailor-made for you.

Fly into Iaşi airport or Bacău airport and arrange car hire. We recommend booking your vehicle in advance to secure the best rates and conditions.

Head to your first stop, Suceava, some 150 kilometres from either airport – a town well worth exploring where you’ll spend your first night.

Begin your monastery tour at Voroneț, 40 kilometres away, known as the Sistine Chapel of the East. Next, visit the nearby Humor Monastery, the only one without a bell tower, then continue to Moldovita Monastery. Before returning to Suceava, call in at Sucevita Monastery, the largest of all and remarkably fortress-like in appearance.

On day three, travel to Târgu Mureș and unwind with a wine-tasting tour, sampling some of Romania’s finest white wines. On day four, explore the spectacular Brașov, and on day five, journey through Romania’s glorious landscapes to Bucharest.

On day six, reach Tulcea, the gateway to the Delta. Watch the sunset during a boat trip through the delta’s channels and natural wonders, then savour a traditional local dinner featuring caviar, fresh fish and Saramura, a grilled carp appetiser served with polenta and garlic sauce.

To complete your Monasteries and Delta journey, dedicate a day to birdwatching and visit Tulcea’s Natural History Museum. Finally, head to Bucharest airport for your return flight.
