Râșnov is a small town in Transylvania that surprises visitors with the sheer density of history packed into just a few square kilometres. Situated in the heart of the Brașov region, at approximately 630 metres above sea level, it owes its reputation primarily to Cetatea Râșnov, one of the best-preserved peasant fortresses in all of Romania. Its medieval walls have dominated the surrounding landscape since the 14th century and today represent one of Transylvania’s most visited sites.

With around 17,000 inhabitants, Râșnov has managed to preserve the authentic character of a town with Saxon heritage, evident in the architecture of the old town centre, the evangelical church and the remnants of urban planning typical of the German communities that colonised the region during the Middle Ages. Despite being geographically very close to Brașov, the town maintains its own identity and offers a more relaxed pace of exploration compared to the neighbouring city.

Râșnov’s location also makes it an excellent base for exploring some of Romania’s most iconic attractions: Bran Castle, the Poiana Brașov ski resort and the landscapes of the Southern Carpathians are all within a few minutes’ drive. For those wishing to experience Transylvania away from the crowds, Râșnov is a choice that rarely disappoints.

Things to do in Râșnov

Râșnov is small, but every corner tells centuries of history. The medieval fortress is the essential starting point for any visit, but the Saxon town at its feet, the churches, the museum and the surrounding natural attractions offer a rich and varied programme suitable for both families and history and culture enthusiasts alike. Allow at least a full day to explore everything.

Cetatea Râșnov — The Fortress

The Cetatea Râșnov is the town’s main attraction and one of the most impressive medieval monuments in all of Transylvania. Built from the 14th century onwards by the Teutonic Knights and later enlarged by the townspeople themselves, the fortress served as a refuge for the civilian population in case of attack — not as a noble residence. This “popular” origin makes it unique among Romania’s fortresses. Perched on a rocky outcrop some 100 metres above the town, it’s accessible on foot along a cobbled path or by cable car. Inside you’ll find restored houses, wells, towers and a small museum. The views of the mountains from the ramparts are among the region’s finest.

Dinosaur Park

Within the fortress complex, or nearby depending on the season, you’ll find the Parcul cu Dinozauri, a themed park with life-size dinosaur reproductions set among greenery. It’s one of the most popular attractions for families with children and a reason Râșnov draws visitors beyond those interested purely in history. The models are well detailed and the path is suitable for all ages. The pairing of a medieval fortress with dinosaurs may seem quirky, but it works surprisingly well: younger visitors eagerly drag their parents to explore both sites with equal enthusiasm.

Old Town Centre and Unirii Square

Râșnov’s historic core revolves around Piața Unirii, the main square that retains the typical urban layout of Saxon towns in Transylvania. The pastel-coloured houses, stone doorways and cobbled streets tell the story of a German community that lived here for centuries before emigrating in large numbers after 1989. Strolling through the centre is pleasant and unhurried: you won’t find the crowds of Brașov or Sighișoara, but an authentic atmosphere that encourages you to slow down. Cafés and restaurants around the square serve traditional Romanian cuisine and dishes inspired by Saxon cooking.

Saxon Evangelical Church

Râșnov’s evangelical church is one of the town’s oldest religious buildings, dating in its current form to the 15th century. Like many Saxon churches in Transylvania, it’s characterised by simple interiors, sturdy stone walls and a bell tower that serves as a visual landmark across the entire area. The building tells the story of the German Lutheran community that for centuries formed one of the town’s fundamental components. Access is often possible during daylight hours; ask locally for current opening times.

Things to do in the surrounding area

Râșnov’s location is extraordinarily strategic for those wishing to explore the best of Transylvania and the Carpathians. Within just a few kilometres you’ll find some of Romania’s most celebrated attractions.

Bran Castle

Just 14 kilometres from Râșnov, Bran Castle — universally known as Dracula’s Castle — is one of the most visited monuments in all of Romania. Perched on a rock at the entrance to the pass connecting Transylvania to Wallachia, the castle was only indirectly linked to the legend of Vlad the Impaler, yet its Gothic architecture and surrounding landscape make it an extraordinary sight nonetheless. The interior rooms display furniture, armour and objects from the Romanian royal court. A visit here combines perfectly with a trip to Râșnov’s fortress on the same day.

Poiana Brașov

Just 10 kilometres from Râșnov, Poiana Brașov is Romania’s leading ski resort and one of Eastern Europe’s most renowned winter sports destinations. In winter the slopes attract skiers from across the continent, whilst in summer the resort transforms into a paradise for trekking, mountain biking and hiking in the Carpathian wilderness. Even those staying in Râșnov can easily reach the lifts in just a few minutes’ drive. During peak winter season, staying in Râșnov can be a more economical alternative to accommodation directly at Poiana Brașov.

Trekking in the Southern Carpathians

The area around Râșnov offers direct access to the Bucegi Mountains and the Postăvarul Mountains, part of the Southern Carpathians. Marked trails depart from the town and the Poiana Brașov resort towards alpine scenery of rare beauty. In summer the territory is busy with hikers, whilst in autumn the beech and fir forests display extraordinary warm tones. Trekking enthusiasts will find routes suitable for all levels, from gentle trails through Saxon villages to more challenging ascents towards the ridges. Check trail conditions before setting out, especially in spring.

Where to stay in Râșnov

Those choosing to stay in Râșnov’s town centre are just minutes on foot from the fortress and the heart of the old town. Accommodation is concentrated in small family-run hotels, guesthouses and holiday cottages that offer an authentic atmosphere and prices often lower than larger regional centres. This is the ideal choice for those wanting to experience Transylvania at a slower pace, away from crowds, with the illuminated fortress visible from your window in the evening.

The area between Râșnov and Poiana Brașov hosts higher-end properties, including resorts, spa hotels and equipped chalets designed primarily for winter tourism. Those arriving to ski will appreciate having the slopes within easy reach; those visiting in summer will benefit from lower rates and lush mountain scenery. This area also offers some of the region’s best pet-friendly and family-friendly accommodation.
