Timişoara Airport

Timișoara Traian Vuia International Airport (IATA code: TSR) is the main airport serving Banat and one of the busiest in western Romania. It lies approximately 12 km north-east of Timișoara‘s city centre, reachable in 20-25 minutes under normal traffic conditions. The airport is named after Traian Vuia, a pioneering figure in Romanian aviation and native of the region, born in Surducul Mic in 1872.

Its location makes it a strategic gateway for western Transylvania and for those wishing to explore Banat. The capital lies approximately 530 km to the east (around 5 hours by car), whilst Cluj-Napoca is reached in approximately 310 km (3 hours). Arad is just 50 km north (40 minutes), and the Hungarian border is less than 80 km away, making this airport convenient for those arriving from central Europe by road.

The airport has recorded significant passenger traffic growth in recent years, thanks to the expansion of low-cost flights to major cities in Germany, Spain, the UK and France. Getting from the airport to Timișoara city centre

Urban bus

The most economical way to reach the city centre is the E4 bus line, which connects the airport directly to Timișoara’s centre with stops at the main squares. The journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes depending on traffic, with regular departures during daylight hours. Tickets can be purchased on board or at kiosks near the airport entrance, at a very reasonable cost of just a few Romanian lei.

It’s advisable to check updated timetables directly at the terminal exit or on the local public transport company’s website STPT, as evening and night services may be limited or unavailable. For those arriving on evening flights, it’s preferable to opt for a taxi or a pre-booked ride service.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Regular taxi ranks are located at the arrivals exit. It’s recommended to use only vehicles with approved meters and to request a receipt at the end of your journey. The ride to Timișoara city centre covers approximately 12 km and takes 20-25 minutes, with an estimated fare of between 40 and 60 lei, varying depending on the company and time of day.

Alternatively, the apps Bolt and Uber operate in Timișoara and allow you to book a ride directly from the airport, with an estimated price visible before confirming your journey. This option offers greater transparency on costs and is often competitive compared to traditional taxis.

Car hire

For those wishing to explore Banat and western Romania independently, car hire is the most practical choice. The road connection to the city centre is direct and well signposted. Following the DN6 national road will take you to Timișoara’s heart in approximately 20 minutes. The airport is also easily accessible via the A1 motorway, which connects Timișoara with Arad and, continuing east, with the rest of Romania.
