Craiova Airport

Craiova International Airport (IATA code: CRA) is the airport serving the city of Craiova and the entire Oltenia region, in south-west Wallachia. It is situated approximately 7 km east of the city centre, reachable in 15-20 minutes under normal traffic conditions.

Its location makes it a convenient access point not only for Craiova, but also for those wishing to explore this part of Romania without passing through Bucharest. The capital lies about 230 km to the east, with a driving time of roughly 2 hours and 30 minutes on the A1 motorway. Pitești is approximately 130 km away (1 hour and 30 minutes), Timișoara is around 200 km to the north-west (2 hours and 15 minutes), whilst Sibiu can be reached in approximately 170 km (2 hours via the E81).

Operational flights from Craiova connect mainly to European destinations, including various German, British and other major European cities, largely thanks to low-cost carriers that have contributed to passenger traffic growth in recent years.

Getting to Craiova city centre from the airport

The quickest and most straightforward way to reach Craiova city centre is by taxi. Regular taxi ranks are available at the terminal exit; it is advisable to use only vehicles with a clearly visible metre and belonging to official firms to avoid unregulated fares. The journey to the city centre covers approximately 7 km and takes 15-20 minutes, costing roughly between 30 and 50 Romanian lei, depending on traffic and the firm chosen.

As an alternative to traditional taxis, you can book a private hire car service in advance through apps such as Bolt or Uber, both available in Craiova. These platforms allow you to see the estimated fare before boarding, offering greater transparency. Pick-up takes place directly outside the arrivals area.

Urban bus

For those preferring a more economical option, public urban transport is available. The bus line connecting the airport to the city takes approximately 25-35 minutes, with stops along the main city routes. Tickets are very affordable, around 3-4 lei. It is advisable to check the latest timetables directly at the terminal exit or on the local transport company’s website, as evening and weekend services may be reduced.

Car hire

Car hire is one of the most practical choices for those arriving in Craiova intending to explore Oltenia and Wallachia independently. The airport features desks from major international operators, where you can collect your vehicle directly from the arrivals area exit, without wasting time.

Having your own car is particularly advantageous for reaching attractions around Craiova that are not easily accessible by public transport: from the Transfăgărășan Road to the villages of the Wallachian hinterland.
